In March 2018 we hosted a Diversity Roundtable for law firm leaders.
We were delighted to have been joined by Dr Louise Ashley, an academic who is well known to many international law firms for her cutting edge work on diversity and social mobility.
Dr Ashley, who is a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Professional Services Firms at Cass Business School, gave a short presentation on the issue of intersectionality in relation to diversity and equality, in particular how one cannot look at gender in isolation and must also consider the impact of other factors such as ethnicity and social background. The focus of the discussion was around the notion of “fit” and how lawyers at law firms have to adapt themselves to fit into the law firm cultural model. The presentation discussed how the glass ceiling is an outmoded concept and has instead been replaced by the metaphorical glass slipper, into which some lawyers struggle to fit their own identity.
Dr Ashley sparked a lively discussion among the law firm leaders who were in attendance. We are also running a similar event for HR leaders in June 2018.
